Thousands of children and their parents dotted the South Lawn of the White House on Monday, joining the Easter Bunny, President Obama and dozens of celebrities and professional athletes for the annual Easter Egg Roll.

First lady Michelle Obama sings and dances as she, Al Roker and Anne Burrell cook pasta with pesto.

The layer of fog that greeted the first wave of excited guests quickly lifted to reveal a brilliant sunny morning. Obama noted the weather as he welcomed guests.

“It was a little shaky this morning, but all of you did a great job sending a message upstairs,” he said.

More than 35,000 guests from all 50 states received timed-entry tickets to the daylong event that features egg rolling, live music, cooking stations, sports activities and storytelling.

Just before the president and his family walked out of the White House to greet the crowd, the Easter Bunny appeared with Robby Novak, who plays the “Kid President” in a series of YouTube videos. The 9-year-old Tennessee resident, who filmed a promotional video for the Egg Roll earlier this year, helped introduce the first family.

After thanking Novak, Michelle Obama encouraged her guests to have fun.

“We want you to run around.  We want you to go over and see the White House Garden.  We want you to learn about making tasty, healthy food,” she said, also noting the other activities available. “But overall, we want you guys to have a good time and keep moving and be healthy.  And, kids, eat your vegetables, okay?”

With his dog, Bo, sitting obediently next to him, President Obama narrated the popular children’s book, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” a story about letters of the alphabet climbing up a coconut tree.

“Clearly, the alphabet is full of a bunch of troublemakers,” he said.

The president also took a shot — 22 of them, actually — on the lawn’s basketball court. He failed to make a free throw during various attempts, until he finally handed the ball to a boy and asked for help. The boy successfully made the layup.

"He couldn't make one. I had to help him out," said Kahron Campbell, 10, of Landover, MD.

Elsewhere, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson also was on hand, one of many professional athletes promoting the year’s theme, “Be Healthy, Be Active, Be You!” as a tie-in to the first lady’s campaign to fight childhood obesity by encouraging physical activity.

“It’s very important, especially with our young generations, to get those kids used to eating healthy, being more active, and getting outside the house and being active. It really helps with daily life,” Peterson told TODAY’s Al Roker as the two spoke from the South Lawn. “I feel like it’s very important what the first lady is doing with the ‘Let’s Move’ initiative to get kids more aware and get adults more aware. Because I remember when I was 13, 14. I wasn’t inside playing … I was outside.  I can see where it helped me.”

“American Idol’’ stars Jordin Sparks and Jessica Sanchez topped the lineup of musical performers, while celebrities tapped to read stories to the crowd included NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, Oscar-nominated child actress Quvenzhane Wallis, and characters from "Sesame Street."

Earlier this month, the White House seemed to hint that the annual event was in jeopardy of being canceled due to spending cuts, but quickly shot down that speculation and confirmed the celebration would go on as scheduled.

Each participant left the event with a souvenir hardwood Easter egg emblazoned with the signatures of President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. The eggs come in numerous colors and can also be purchased for $7.99 each. Those who buy the full set online will get a bonus egg featuring Bo, the first family's dog.

White House: Sequester won't stop Easter Egg Roll

    TODAY

White House spokesman Jay Carney has assured that the 135th annual White House Easter Egg Roll on April 1 will go on as planned despite a memo last week indicating it could possible be cancelled due to looming spending cuts.

    By Scott Stump, TODAY contributor

The looming sequester crisis will not stop the Easter Bunny from visiting the White House for the 135th straight year.

The annual White House Easter Egg Roll, hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, will go on as planned on April 1 this year after a memo sent out by the White House last week indicated it could potentially be cancelled due to spending cuts. White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday that the event is still on.

"I just want to be clear that we are currently planning to proceed with the Easter Egg Roll," he said. "Because we distributed tickets to the Easter Egg Roll far in advance of the actual event, we alerted all ticket holders that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty, including the possibility of a government shutdown."

The event on the White House's South Lawn is expected to attract 35,000 people who won tickets via a lottery system. In the White House invitation sent out last week, it notes that “by using these tickets, guests are acknowledging that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty surrounding the Executive Office of the President and other federal agencies. If cancelled, the event will not be re-scheduled.  We will notify you if there are any modifications to this event.”

"Again, the language that got attention on the Hill and was reported duly by the press was prepared well in advance, and it had to do with the potential for at least the possibility of a government shutdown should there not be a resolution on the continuing resolution,'' Carney said. "It was not about sequester principally.

"So having said that, I want to be clear that because it certainly looks like there is progress being made, and nobody expects a government shutdown, that we have every expectation that the Easter Egg Roll will proceed as planned.  I hope that settles the matter."

That led to speculation that the event would be a victim of spending cuts if a resolution is not reached to prevent a federal government shutdown. Carney had previously reassured a crowd last week that the Easter Egg Roll would go off as planned.

The White House seemed certain that the event would survive when it released a promotional video on Monday of the Obamas' dog, Bo, prowling for Easter eggs on the White House lawn.

Could sequester shut down White House Easter Egg Roll?

In light of ongoing budget battles, the White House released a memo suggesting the sequester could shut down the 135 annual Easter Egg Roll. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

    By Tracy Saelinger, TODAY contributor

Could politics shut down the White House Easter Egg Roll?

The annual event, along the same lines as the hokey White House tradition of the Thanksgiving Turkey pardon, will celebrate its 135th anniversary this year — unless the partisan battle over the sequester gets in the way.

A memo released by the White House last week is causing a stir, as it seems to hint that the sequester could shut down the Egg Roll.

The White House invitation to the event, which went out to all members of Congress, notes that “by using these tickets, guests are acknowledging that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty surrounding the Executive Office of the President and other federal agencies. If cancelled, the event will not be re-scheduled.  We will notify you if there are any modifications to this event.”

More than 35,000 people are expected at the festivities on the South Lawn. The 2013 souvenir eggs come in purple, blue, yellow and pink and include the stamped figures of the president and first lady, according to the White House website. The five-pack "Collector’s Egg Set" also includes a commemorative “Bo” egg; commemorative eggs become part of the tradition in 1981, under President Reagan.

But if you’re a Congressperson — or one of the lucky regular folks who won a ticket via the lottery system to the 2013 Easter Egg Roll on April 1 — you can breathe a sigh of relief.

A staffer at the White House Office of Legislative Affairs told TODAY.com on Monday that a cancellation of the event is unlikely.

“I wouldn’t worry about it,” he said.

On Monday, the White House seemed to anticipate that the Egg Roll would go off without a hitch, as it released a promotional video of Bo Obama hunting for Easter eggs on the White House lawn.

Press Secretary Jay Carney also reassured a crowd last week that the event would happen as scheduled.

They already bought the eggs. Still ought to cancel. The taxpayers are paying for the guests and families of Congress to do this and they ought to be working

Last-minute Valentine's Day tips: Keep it simple, slacker!

    Getty Images stock

It's not too late to plan a perfect Valentine's Day.

    By Meena Hart Duerson, TODAY

So, Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and you’ve got nothing: You haven’t come up with a gift or made dinner reservations, and you forgot to order flowers. Have no fear! The perfect Valentine’s Day is still within reach. Here are some tips for how to salvage a romantic night.

    1. Get on the same page. "The biggest mistake couples make is waiting until the last minute to talk about Valentine's Day," dating guru Chiara Atik of the website HowAboutWe told TODAY.com. "What often ends up happening is that one person assumes they'll be going out, the other assumes they'll do something low-key, or they each assume the other person is planning it. TALK ABOUT VALENTINE'S DAY BEFORE HAND."

    2. The food. It’s OK if you missed the boat on booking a trendy table for two; nothing wins over a date quite like a romantic home-cooked meal. However, now is not the time to experiment with the most extravagant recipe – stick to something simple. Try these foolproof classics from the TODAY archives:

Giada De Laurentiis cooks up a romantic  pasta topped with beef, smoked almonds and basil  – perfect for your Valentine's Day dinner.

    Romantic Valentine's Day pasta
'Top Chef' contestant's foolproof brick chicken
Treat your valentine to a savory salad, perfect pasta and sinful dessert

Most importantly, do NOT turn this meal into a stressful experience — if cooking's not your thing, order take-out from your date's favorite restaurant. "What makes Valentine's Day romantic isn't the setting, or the gifts," Atik says, "it's spending time with each other, and taking an evening to really show how much you value one another."

    3. Flowers: Roses are red, violets are blue, and picking up flowers is so easy, your Valentine will be thrilled if you do. If you act right this second you could still place an order online, but if you miss the delivery deadline head to your local florist (sites like Foursquare's Valentine's Day Guide can help you find one in your area), armed with these tips for how to snag the best deal.

And remember: You don’t have to stick to a traditional bouquet of red roses (especially if you waited too long and the selection is picked over). Surprise your date with something beautiful and unexpected, like tulips or an orchid — or try a flower delivery subscription service like H. Bloom to keep the romance going after February 14.

    4. Gifts: Admit it: You blanked on the big day, and now you're starting to feel panicked. Don't just rush out and buy a random gift; you still have time to put together something thoughtful:

Carley Knobloch from Digitwirl shows off a variety of tech gifts, apps and websites that you can use to keep your love hot for Valentine's Day.

For the music lover: Load her iPod with this romantic playlist
Show off your crafty side with these adorable DIY Valentines, or make these Martha Stewart-approved gifts
For the techie in your life, scoop up one of these: Tech to keep your love alive
If your Valentine loves being pampered, head to SpaFinder.com to give the gift of relaxation
Make a getaway: For the definition of a last-minute plan, book a same-day room at HotelTonight.com.

But don't blow your budget just because it's a holiday. "Don't spend crazy amounts of money on one elaborate date," Atik says. "Taking time to regularly spend time together and celebrate your relationship, however modestly, is ultimately much more romantic than one big (forced) blowout." A handwritten card expressing your love goes a long way.

And if you're celebrating this Valentine's Day solo, celebrate yourself at these single-friendly restaurants, and pick up some of these best gifts for that special someone — yourself!
