The TIME Person of the Year short list revealed

On Tuesday morning, TIME magazine's short list of eight potential choices for its iconic Person of the Year cover was revealed live on TODAY. The list includes Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!; Mohammed Morsi, president of Egypt; Undocumented Americans; Bill and Hillary ClintonPresident Barack ObamaMalala Yousafzai, the student activist from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban; Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple; and the Higgs Boson and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.

As it has for the past 85 years, the weekly newsmagazine will select the person (or sometimes group, or thing) that its editors deem had the single greatest impact during the past year, for better or for worse. Last year's choice was The Protester.

Some 5.6 million people have already voted in TIME's reader poll. On Dec. 13, TIME revealed that the winner was Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of North Korea.

Also in the top 10 in TIME's reader poll: funnyman Jon Stewart; Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas; Burmese leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and Thein Sein; New Jersey's Gov. Chris Christie, and two choices who also made it onto the magazine's short list: Mohammed Morsi and Undocumented Immigrants.

TIME's official choice will come from this short list of eight, and will be revealed Wednesday morning live on TODAY, on TIME.com, and via TIME's Twitter feed.

Which is your pick?

"Undocumented Americans"?? Seriously - who put Undocumented Americans on this list? How about calling them what they are - CRIMINALS.

Entitled to Free stuff. Don't have you a bunker to build to stop the upcoming zombie apocalypse? If you think Americans would have any chance against the weapons our armed forces have right now you're being ridiculous. Guns do nothing but harm. The sooner you realize the founding fathers knew they had a place but weren't the end all be all the better.

How positively offensive-- "Undocumented Americans"-- B.S. There is no such thing. Proper and accurate references include: (1) ILLEGALS, (2) ILLEGAL ALIENS, (3) ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS, (4) ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! There is no such thing as an "Undocumented Americans". Americans, by definition, are all documented! IDIOTIC!

Further, as a life-long Democrat, I want for our immigration laws to be enforced inviolate! NO REWARDS AND SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR IMMIGRATION LAWBREAKING!

A GOVERNMENT WHICH REFUSES TO ENFORCE ITS OWN LAWS IS INTOLERABLE!

You don't have any military background, do you, basedrum....or much knowledge of recent history. The Afghani people, among the poorest on earth, held off the mighty Russian military for ten years, until they gave up and went back to Russia with their tails between their legs. Had the Afghanis been as well armed as we Americans are, who knows what they might have done to the Ruskis.

jargar: Ordinarily, I'd disagree with you on that. Tragedies come and go. But, I think in this case Obama and the left will push, like they did with Obamacare, to restrict our freedoms and legislate the end of the 2nd Amendment. On second thought, Obama will just sign an executive order ending our rights like he has done time and time again. The sad part is that the dems in power are out and out Marxists and Communists and the repub leadership is so far to the left that it is difficult to tell the difference between the two. 25 years ago there is no way that even the dems would have agreed with what Boehner and the repub leadership seems to be willing to go along with as they would have been seen as way too far to the left.

Now, we have a society that is relying more and more on the government and seems to have no clue as to what the Constitution is about. They also have no understanding of history or economics. So, the only direction we are heading to is to imitate the Soviet Union. The left loved it then and they still love it now.

Forget the politicians...how about a few loving and dedicated teachers that did everything they could think of to protect our precious children in a Conn. school !

The person(s) who should be on the list are the ones who really affected and influenced the lives of others in a positive way. Malala is one. The teachers were true heroes, too. The others on the list, while substantial, have not reached the level of the aforementioned persons. In the future, I would love to see people who have overcome obstacles, put themselves on the frontlines, are something other than politicians or celebrities (unless they were acting outside of those categories), and truly represent what we should strive for. We need to honor real heroes.

I think teachers should be The Person Of The Year, not just because of what how heroically they acted at Newtown Ct but because of what they do all year for our children. they are our furture

From the looks of your grammar, I'd say your a prototype of what our teachers accomplish. Maybe teachers in China should make the list since their children outperform ours leaps and bounds with far less money.

Blake, in countries like China children who show no aptitude are separated and sent to the fields to work. Apparently you want that to be the case in America. Same people yelling about freedom all the time want to restrict the education of the masses. How apt!

There is no good reason that CEO's of any company should be in the running unless they have contributed to this world in a positive manner. If that's the case I should be in the running, i was back to work 3 days after all my children were born and I certainly don't make 1m a year.

The Brave and selfless teachers and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary should be on that cover with the children they were protecting. Or Malala, what a amazing young woman to stand up and voice her opinion in a world where she was shot all because she wanted an education. Or Aung San Suu Kyi, who was imprisoned for so many years just because she wanted a democratic voice to be heard. These are the real people in this world who make a difference and who are not in the wealthiest brackets. i wonder if the CEO of Yahoo would stand up to the face of adversity if she was dirt poor and facing imprisonment.

Of course, NONE of the CEO's, good nor horrible ones, ever had a $1 Trillion "Budget" Deficit on their company. That company would not exist, except in bankruptcy court which is exactly where Obama belongs, in court for embezzlement of the taxpayer's money.

That's a wonderful idea. Even though Sandy Hook was the most tragic, all of the mass shooting this year had victims that were loved by many. We should remember them all as person of the year.

Don't belong to facebook and never will, so anyway, if you voted for Obama this country is as stupid as I thought it was. Also agree that no representative of a company should be eligible. This is just a poor showing of how things are going in this country, and with the latest mass shooting it only proves that the politicians can only argue and fight over what to be done, instead of getting it together. Too me there really is no person of the year this year, and anyone who picks any politician for that should have there head examined.

While the kids in Newtown are not on the list only because it just happened, perhaps you could combine them with someone like Malala and make the Person of the Year a group like "The Children". Then you can recognize all those children who have made a difference this year.

I remember a time when Time was a bastion of unbiased news around the world. Now we have a list for "Person of the Year" that includes illegal aliens, a new dictator in Egypt, the socialist numpty in the White House, the Arkansas gang and on and on an on. Time for Time to close the doors and turn off the lights as it is merely a shadow of it's former greatness. Shame, but the same can be said for many once-great organizations in the US. All gone to pot.

Amazing the subtle wording used. TIME's own description calls this category "Undocumented Immigrants" but yet this Today News survey has chosen to RENAME the category to "Undocumented Americans". Since when did crossing the border illegally actually make one an American?

'Undocumented Americans?' You must mean the criminal wet backs that have invaded the country, with the help of the criminal enterprise that is busy destroying the nation. Those are the ones that should be sitting in a jail cell, running for their lives, or chained down to a metal cot somewhere- like our Marine is. Time magazine, like all of the other Communist groups, is truly despicable.

The 6 adults who gave their lives attempting to save the children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School should share in this honor. These people gave their lives attempting to save the innocence and the lives of these children who are, indeed, the future of not only this country but the world. They are deserving of so much more than just a title on a magazine cover. We can never truly repay them or their families. It is the least we can do.

It's an unfortunate fact that people are still suffering in this planet but I'm gonna have to pick "Higgs Boson/Fabiola Gianotti" for Time's Person(s)/Thing of the Year. Something different from previous Time's Person of the Year. And I think the Higgs Boson would have more lasting effect in years to come.
