The TIME Person of the Year short list revealed

On Tuesday morning, TIME magazine's short list of eight potential choices for its iconic Person of the Year cover was revealed live on TODAY. The list includes Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!; Mohammed Morsi, president of Egypt; Undocumented Americans; Bill and Hillary ClintonPresident Barack ObamaMalala Yousafzai, the student activist from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban; Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple; and the Higgs Boson and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.

As it has for the past 85 years, the weekly newsmagazine will select the person (or sometimes group, or thing) that its editors deem had the single greatest impact during the past year, for better or for worse. Last year's choice was The Protester.

Some 5.6 million people have already voted in TIME's reader poll. On Dec. 13, TIME revealed that the winner was Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of North Korea.

Also in the top 10 in TIME's reader poll: funnyman Jon Stewart; Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas; Burmese leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and Thein Sein; New Jersey's Gov. Chris Christie, and two choices who also made it onto the magazine's short list: Mohammed Morsi and Undocumented Immigrants.

TIME's official choice will come from this short list of eight, and will be revealed Wednesday morning live on TODAY, on TIME.com, and via TIME's Twitter feed.

Which is your pick?

The Abortionist! Why? They slowly rip, and tear limb by limb, squezing and squashing, sucking, smashing the LIFE out of MILLIONS of innocent babies every year!

Abortionist would NEVER do to oneself what he/she does onto others. Rather easy to be for abortion when one is too old to be aborted.

That list with the exception of Malala is disgusting!!!! Not unexpected I suppose given the source, but no one else on that list is deserving of Person of the Year (perhaps the scientists of which I admittedly know little). I vote with making the victims of the Newtown Massacre Persons of the Year if at all possible. Malala was a victim of violence as well as these precious babies and adults, and we can all learn something from all this.

Exactly, Maggie, Only Malala is worthy to be on the list. No mention of the 4 heros in Benghazi that we (US Adminstration) turned our backs on in their time of greatest need nor John Cruz, the whistleblower into HSBC's money-laundering activity

Michael, great choices, but remember this is TIME Magazine, they rather have Hitler (actually had) than those who believe in limited Government such as Michelle Bachman or Ron Paul

        "Undocumented Americans"?

Nice spin on an old issue!

How is it possible to be an "undocumented American"?!

Why not just say ILLEGAL ALIEN or the fave term of the "progressive" left "undocumented worker"?

I guess I could sneak into North Korea, then I would be an "undocumented American". Hey, I AM TIME's PERSON of the YEAR!!

BTW: The "undocumented American" nomination is nothing more than a PR stunt by TIME to get illegal aliens amnesty and eventual American citizenship...which means that ALL of their relatives can also seek amnesty once the students obtain it.

While you bust your butt to put YOUR kids through college, these kids will get grants and scholarships to attend America's best colleges and universities, despite not being citizens. Therefore most Americans struggle to put their own kids through college while their tax dollars pay for illegal aliens to attend our universities on the public dole!

John Ford, I wish I could say that you are wrong, but to the regret of many great Americans, you are 100% correct in your comment. With Obama occupying the Oval Office, John Ford's comments will remain true.

JOhn Ford, thank you for saying what's been on my mind for a long time. They are just here for handouts and free everything, they are not here to earn a living and pull their own weight like all of us. They are here to pump out a half dozen kids at our expense, live on food stamps and WIC, evade and avoid taxes, drive drunk and illegally, and live free rent. Then they go back to "their country". Time is just trying to kiss liberal ass.

The category "Undocumented American" does not mean vote for whomever you please. It means "Illegal Alien." Unfortunately, TIME is not alone in being unable to call something what it is.
Let's keep the vocab lesson going:
        Revenues = Taxes; Stimulus = Spending; Entitlements = Handouts; Fair Share = Dependency;
        N.B. - Sandy Hook/Newtown should be a category

In TIME's reader poll. On Dec. 13, TIME revealed that the winner was Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of North Korea. He's not even on their short list.

One who is on their short list is Mohamed Morsi, for better of for worse following Time's criteria, who outmaneuvered Egypt's influential generals — the most significant vestiges of the Mubarak regime. And as rockets exploded over Gaza and Israel, he played an instrumental — some would say historic — role in brokering a cease-fire between Hamas and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu.

What remains for his legacy is yet to be determined in history.

When will we start applying the laws we have on the books for the protection and welfare of the citizens of this country. Why do es the liberal pick and choose what they want to obney and what they want to ignore and then get praised for circumventing US law and the constitution. No more one sided deals, You want amnesty ( to expand the ignorant democrat voter base) THEN CLOSE THE BORDERS, otherwise its just a constant flow of illegal democrat voters. Another knee jerk reaction to a tragedy ? Watch the democrats scream to take your guns, Why ? Because they are slowly stealing all your rights and liberty and they want to take the guns out of your hands before your realize it and try to fight back. Common sense needs to apply but it dont

                Reply#41 - Tue Dec 18, 2012 10:30 AM EST

I disagree with your calling democrats ignorant. You're making presumptions about the education level and life experience of hundreds of millions of Americans and millions of illegal immigrants.

I do, however, agree on the complex and divisive topic of amnesty. Quite frankly you should enter this country legally. There are processes to be followed which are fair, though time consuming.

Perhaps providing a path for those who are already here, while bolstering the ranks of the immigration authorities to both shorten the wait-time of those applying legally and prevent entry through both our over-porous borders would provide the most effective combination of action moving forward. Who knows.

This topic holds the weight of millions of livelihoods and should be debated thoroughly and fairly without partisan rancor. Can you raise the empathy required to imagine yourself in their shoes?

To presume all illegal immigrants would be democrat is to deny the individuality of each person. Don't presume what someone might do given the opportunity, and what they rightly feel is in their best interest. They might vote Libertarian. Or Republican. Or for the bleeding heart pinko commie liberals who want to throw us into a utopia where we all suffer equally. Who knows!

                ---

On the thought of rights and liberty, democrats howled the same cries while President Bush was in office. These arguments hold little merit as Congress holds the power to add or reduce liberty in this country, and only when supported by the current president, and only if not overruled by the Supreme Court.

And regardless of a judiciary's past, making it to becoming a supreme court justice has seemed to help these accomplished jurists to shed their partisan rancor and actually vote based upon the weight of what is right for the body populace and not what is right for one party, religion, ethnicity or gender.

To claim otherwise is to deny history and makes you look ignorant yourself.

I voted for Malaha and it showed that I voted for Marissa Mayer. What gives????? Change my vote. This little girl has shown so much bravery. She has more integrity than any of the idiots on that list. She deserves far more than Person of the Year. How could "undocumented" aliens, ie: illegals, even be considered? MALAHA is only 14 y/o and has suffered so much and is symbol for freedom for other children.

Actually, Malaha, was the ONLY possible vote on that short list. The rest of them in no way do not even come close in deserving the title. But then again, we can not expect much from Time Magazine

Mrs. Clinton has, hand's down, the most stamina of any person I have seen in politics. I hope she has gas left to run in '16 and I will support her (for the second time!). President Clinton is, without a doubt, the most charismatic politician in my lifetime. No one has ever delivered a better convention speech in support of a nominee. . EVER! And a nominee with whom he has more history and not all of it particularly good. And that is what they call a true politician!!

Sorry to those of you who believe Obama will win. Undocumented Americans will be POTY. It's the same premise as last year's The Protester. It's also less controversial, setting the foundation that a group of oppressed people is much more important than just one individual person.

It will give the media another vehicle to reopen the discussion that will eventually lead to amnesty for all Undocumented Americans.
